Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations
A Message from the Executive Director of the ACDI

My last message focused on the ADCI’s Strategic Plan and its implementation for 2007 and beyond. One of the items that I mentioned was the proposed draft for the 6th Ed. of the Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations. Changes over the last 5 – 10 years in our industry have warranted the revision of our source document. Of course, when embarking on any revision of this magnitude it is important to remember that there is a defined process for review, approval, and finally ratification. Once the first draft has been completed, it will go before the Board of Directors for review and approval. Once the draft has successfully progressed from this point, it will be posted for review by all industry stakeholders. This review period for comments and suggested input is tentatively slated for a period of no less than six to eight months. At the conclusion of this period, the second draft will be put forth before the Membership for ratification. It is hoped that the document will be ratified sometime before 2010. However, we must be very careful not to set a timeline that is too accelerated. Some of the changes that we are looking to implement involve major expenditures in equipment, especially in the area of saturation diving. This will require fair and realistic timelines and dates for when these new recommended standards will take effect. I want to take this opportunity to elaborate on some of the proposed changes to date.

Sheri Weisman “Winter” 2008

January and February were busy months at CDA with David Keats’ audit of the underwater welding program, the on-site visit of ACCET (Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training) for reaccreditation, the hiring of a new Registrar, Shari Weisman, and two graduations!

January 2008 started on very positive note, as CDA completed a thorough audit with David Keats of Speciality Welds and are proud to announce that we achieved excellent results. CDA is one of only six accredited schools in the United States, and the only American school offering this internationally recognized underwater welding program (Underwater Welding Specialist). In association with Speciality Welds, LTD of the United Kingdom, CDA teaches the Weldcraft Pro underwater welding program and certify the graduates through Speciality Welds.

ACCET spent two days in late January observing classes and dive station exercises, talking to students, and reviewing all aspects of the facilities. The evaluation went very well, since CDA is constantly striving to improve New Computer Lab training and overall experience for the students.

February also brought two wonderful additions to campus:

An air conditioned workout facility with professional-grade equipment and a flat-screen TV, as well as a new computer lab for the students containing five brand new computers with internet access and a printer. CDA is proud to announce class 1007 graduated February 1st and class 1107 graduated February 29th!

40 Fathom Grotto has also undergone a lot of improvements recently, adding 300 fish, new floating docks, a 180 foot staircase, and a blending station for oxygen, helium, nitrox, trimix, and air with 10,000 cubic feet of each. Scott Evans just completed his training to become a Course Director for Technical Diving. On March 15th the entire grotto staff completed their training for teaching re-breathers. Captain Black’s current focus is updating the underwater sights, so be prepared for new adventures!
